THE DESIGN
The design theory was inspired by black and white LA Noir films. These films represent iconic visions of Los Angeles and have come to define the city through their use of natural and artificial light.

The narrative begins with a foreword and continues with an exploration of LA’s formation, topography, architectural movements, demographics, transportation methods, and future growth.
These themes are consolidated into a booklet that provides a deeper context for how the visuals relate to Los Angeles.

THE PROCESS
Determining the initial shape of the sculpture began by analyzing a city map. The narrative stemmed from weeks of research about the city and condensing that information into storytelling themes. During initial projection tests with a boardamatic, the designs and the sculpture had to be adjusted or scrapped entirely as they became too distorted.
It was integral to find a piece of music that mirrored the abstraction in the designs and maintained a melody that paralleled their cohesion. The music had to build with the visuals and provide softer moments to overlay Los Angeles’ soundscape.
